Whenever you bring a rescue dog into your home, you are taking a risk. Usually that risk pays off in the form of a loving, tail-wagging, brand-new family member, but sometimes rescue dogs come with their own brand of baggage that can be dangerous.
Catherine Svilicic learned this firsthand when she was watching her 17-month-old daughter, Charlotte, play in the yard with their Doberman, Khan. The large dog was abused and abandoned by his previous owner, and since the Svilicics had adopted him only four days earlier, he was still getting used to be around the family.
Even though the dog and the little girl seemed to get along, Khan was about to do something to their daughter that no one would soon forget. His actions would change their family forever…
Catherine Svilicic was supervising her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Charlotte, play outside with their new Doberman, Khan. Khan, who’d been abused by his previous owner, was adopted by the Svilicic family just four days prior.

While they were playing outside, the big Doberman suddenly became aggressive, pushing Charlotte around the yard. Then, to Catherine’s terror, he grabbed the toddler by the diaper and flung her across the yard. Catherine was horrified, but then she realized what had happened: Khan had spotted a poisonous snake—and it was heading right for the little girl.
Khan wasn’t trying to harm Charlotte at all. Rather, his seemingly violent actions were actually a desperate attempt to save her life. This brave dog got Charlotte out of the way just in time, but unfortunately, he wasn’t so lucky…
In his attempt to push little Charlotte out of harm’s way, Khan placed himself in the deadly snake’s sight—and he was bitten. Catherine rushed him to the vet as soon as she could, where he was administered an anti-venom shot. Thankfully, he was able to recover.
It has been nine years since that snake tried (and failed) to attack baby Charlotte, and life couldn’t be happier for this little girl and her beloved dog, Khan. She might not be a baby anymore, but that doesn’t mean she won’t always need her hero at her side!
Much like pit bulls, Doberman Pinschers often get a bad rap. Many people believe that they are inherently dangerous and vicious dogs, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

As with just about any dog out there, from Rottweilers to chihuahuas, Dobermans are just as capable of being affectionate, gentle, and intelligent as any other breed, especially when they’re well-trained.
That being said, they do have a somewhat unpleasant history. The breed was created in Thuringia, a German state, around 1890 by tax collector Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann. His goal was to breed a dog who would protect him from bandits during his collections.

While Dobermans were bred to have naturally intimidating features, they are known to have many positive qualities. They can be obedient, respectful, and dedicated to protecting their families and loved ones, as we certainly saw with Khan.
Khan definitely proves that no matter what breed—or what kind of violent past a dog might have had—there’s little that they value more than the people who love them. Plus, they’re adorable!
This dog is a true hero! If he hadn’t stepped in, the snake would have attacked Charlotte instead. Even though Khan had only been a part of his new family for a few days, this hero pup still knew what he had to do, and he put his life on the line to protect his own. The Svilicics show Khan their appreciation every day by giving him the home he deserves and the love he showed their family in such a remarkable way.
