Elderly Dog And His Friends Finally Escape Filthy Backyard After Years Of Neglect

Everyone has a breaking point when they’re going through a rough situation. No matter how hard life can get, sometimes hitting rock bottom is the first step to finally making things better.

Bagel is a 13-year-old chow mix who reached his breaking point after years of abuse. He and two other animals were living in filthy conditions and had long been neglected. One day, this senior dog decided he’d had enough…

When a 13-year-old chow mix named Bagel was spotted along a busy road in Islip, NY by animal activist Debbie Davidson, the woman assumed he was a stray. He was missing patches of fur and seemed underweight.

When Debbie got out of her car to help him, she was shocked to hear a woman from a nearby house call the dog back to her yard. She tried to intervene, insisting that the dog was unhealthy and needed help, but the woman brushed off her concerns.

As Debbie surveyed the yard, she was upset by what she saw. Two other animals, a German shepherd named Chloe and a cat named Toby, shared the area with Bagel, but there were feces everywhere and their food and water bowls were filthy. She realized that Bagel had escaped the yard to try to find help for his friends.

Chloe was around eight years old and appeared to have hip dysplasia. Both dogs’ nails were so overgrown that they had to hunch over when walking, and neither had been bathed or groomed in a very long time. Both also appeared to have bad skin conditions.

The most shocking was the condition of Toby the cat. The five-year-old’s back legs appeared to be paralyzed, and he had to drag himself around the disgusting yard. He appeared to be in pain, even though the homeowner insisted he couldn’t feel anything.

The woman told Debbie that her mother had recently died and her father, the pets’ primary caretaker, was moving to a retirement home and could no longer keep up with them. The woman insisted the animals were “fine,” but Debbie knew she had to get them out of there.

She finally convinced the woman to let her try to find the animals a new home, and she put out a call on Facebook…

The Pets4Luv Foundation reached out to Debbie after seeing her post, and within 24 hours, all three animals were in the organization’s care. Still, they were in worse shape than anyone thought. Toby’s paralysis had actually been caused by a genetic condition that left him without ligaments keeping his knee caps in place, and he was in a great deal of pain.

Bagel and Chloe had worms and various skin infections, and Bagel had an ear infection that was so bad it had rendered him deaf. Despite everything the animals had been through, they were very cooperative and affectionate with the workers who soon dubbed them the “Islip three.”

Bagel, Chloe, and Toby have been in the shelter for several months now, but their medical issues are ongoing. Chloe needs surgery to remove some of the hardened and scarred skin that’s causing her discomfort, and Toby has had one of his knees operated on but is waiting for funds to come through to take care of the other one.

There have been some people interested in adopting the animals, but between the trio’s ongoing medical issues and their age, nobody has followed through.

Bagel and Chloe are a bonded pair, and the shelter would like to see them adopted together. They prefer each other’s company to that of other dogs, but are both very personable and friendly with humans. Toby is also extremely friendly, but he needs a family that can be sensitive to his injuries.

Just watching Bagel and Chloe play together at the shelter is proof that these sweet animals deserve a loving home together.
