Candid Photos Of Alicia Keys Are Showing A New Side Of The Singer

Alicia Keys once said, "We're all going to change. Otherwise, it's boring." And given where the award-winning songstress is now, it’s hard to believe her humble origins. Whether you look at her best-selling albums, acclaimed movie credits, or successful business ventures, Keys has developed into far more than just an entertainer. But the pop star has some surprising thoughts on making it big and leaving her troubled past behind her.

Hell's Kitchen start

Alicia Augello Cook was born on January 25, 1981, in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. Her mother Teresa Augello was a paralegal and part-time actress, but she was always there for her daughter. Sadly, it wasn't the same case for Alicia’s dad.

Dad goes away

Craig Cook was a flight attendant. He stuck around for the first part of Alicia’s life, but when she turned two he left the family forever. Though Alicia powered through.

Family scars

Alicia later said her father was never actually in a relationship with her mom and definitely not in her own life. It might have been different if she could remember his presence. Even so, it wasn’t always that way.

Young struggles

Alicia developed thick skin, but there was once a time when not having a father bothered her. “When I was younger, I minded about that, it made me angry,” she said. But eventually, she put aside that rage and found some helpful insights.
