Mind-Boggling Fashion Trends From The Past That Should Stay Dead

Stop us if you've heard this before: one person puts on something totally off-the-wall, it (somehow) works, and then everyone else copies them. Voilà! You've got yourself a terrible trend that every celebrity, parent, teen, and youth counselor is obsessed with. In the moment, most people believe they're just keeping up with the times — it's only looking back that they realize how ridiculous it all really was. These mind-boggling fashion trends from the past will make you think twice the next time you hop on the latest fad.

1. Tiny color-tinted glasses

Things looking a little rosy? Try wearing every color of the rainbow. In the '90s, these teeny tiny glasses that barely fit on the edge of your nose were a sign of high fashion. Pop icons like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake had them in nearly every color. But let's face it — the only one who should still be wearing them is Sir Elton John.

2. Zoot suits

These quirky men's suits of the 1940s were first featured in an African American comedy show and then quickly became a staple outfit. Between the high-waisted pants, the rimmed hat with the feather, and the gigantic shoulder pads, they're just asking to be worn by Bugs Bunny. Jim Carrey's The Mask even brought back the look in an iconic yellow.

3. Butterflies

Look closely (as if you weren't already) at Mariah Carey's shirt here. Notice the shape? That's right — women wore literal butterfly-shaped shirts in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The look was cute the first time, but we're ready for them to go back into their cocoons.

4. Blossom hats

Blossom was a popular teen sitcom of the early '90s featuring a quirky girl in an iconic bucket hat. The hat always had a giant flower at the front, making it a great fashion choice for little kids but a rather bold one for grownups. Thankfully, this trend died down after the show ended and Mayim Bialik moved on to her most recognizable role to date — Amy Farrah Fowler on the Big Bang Theory!
