Here’s What Happened To The Original SNL Cast Members

For a performer helming the "Weekend Update" desk or reprising an iconic character during the cold open, a gig on Saturday Night Live is often a ticket to success. Many SNL stars took advantage of that momentum and continued putting their comedic chops on display until they were legends. Quite a few performers, though, stepped away from Hollywood — or Hollywood stepped away from them. Either way, these former SNL stars found themselves in unlikely places after leaving Studio 8H for the final time.

1. Garrett Morris

In 1975, Garrett Morris made history as SNL's first African-American cast member; he remained on the show for its first five seasons. After leaving Studio 8H, Morris has remained in pop culture, even appearing on an episode of Family Guy. He has also continued to act, landing roles on sitcoms like The Jamie Foxx Show and Two Broke Girls.

2. Gilda Radner

After her time on SNL ended, Gilda Radner starred in her own one-woman show and several movies. Radner also formed a comedy power couple when she married Gene Wilder of Mel Brooks and Willy Wonka fame. She tragically died in 1989, though, after a battle with ovarian cancer.

3. Al Franken

During the early days of SNL, Al Franken was a key member of the cast and the writing team. In 1995, however, he made the jump to politics; he served as a senator representing Minnesota before resigning amid accusations of sexual harassment.

4. Robin Duke

As a Second City alum, Robin Duke easily made the transition to SNL. After her time on the show ended, she stayed in comedy, appearing in Groundhog Day and other films before moving to Schitt's Creek.
