Woman Walking Her Dog Spots A Strange Item Sticking Out Of Its Fur That Stops Her In Her Tracks

There are two kinds of pet owners: the ones that love walking their dog, and the ones that can’t stand it. You can somewhat sympathize with the latter (especially if you’ve ever walked your pup on a cold winter’s day), but between the quality time you get to spend with your pooch, the exercise, and the look of pure bliss on your pet’s face, who could possibly say “no” to a walk?

For Australian native Sally Watkinson, walking her pups was a regular part of her day and an ideal way to let her pets burn off their pent-up energy. Yet after discovering a strange object lodged in one of her dog’s fur, her leisurely morning walk turned into a frantic sprint to the nearest animal hospital.

The Puli’s playful personality, perhaps, is what led Sally to adopt a couple of her own. In fact, the Melbourne, Australia, native played proud parent to two sweet Pulis, Hugo and Kato.

Sally knew that she could get a toy pooch or some designer breed. Aspiring pet owners will shell out thousands for Instagram-worthy pups, but she wasn’t concerned with all that. Sally had her eye on one ruffled breed that wasn’t designed for social media.

The Puli! Known for their tightly corded, dreadlock-like hair, these Hungarian sheep dogs have become popular pets across the world because of their gentle nature. But their high energy meant that Sally had her work cut out for her.

Looking after one dog is hard enough, so with two energetic pups in her care, Watkinson knew she had to stay on top of their well-being. To this end, she made sure to take them on regular walks to give them a chance to stretch their legs.

But one morning, Watkinson’s walk with her beloved pups took an unusual turn. While Hugo and Kato would sometimes come to her with a loose stick or ball, this time one of the dogs returned with a find who had four legs of its own.

Latched onto Kato’s thick fur was a small animal, no bigger than a stuffed toy. But what was this tiny creature? A squirrel? A rat? Some kind of fluffy alien?

As it turned out, the adorable hitchhiker was actually a baby possum! Though one would’ve expected a newborn possum such as this to have been terrified of Kato, it appeared that the dog’s gentle demeanor and furry coat served as a welcome sight for the lonely newborn.

In nature, baby possums typically latch onto their mother’s back for months at a time, as even after being weaned they’re still too weak to fend for their themselves. Then, one by one, they drop from their mother and strike out on their own.

This newborn, however, seemed to have fallen off prematurely. With its mother nowhere to be found, the baby possum had latched onto Kato likely hoping that the larger creature would care for it.

Yet this was potentially a catastrophe in the making, as dogs and possums aren’t exactly known to get along. Even if Kato didn’t realize the newborn was clinging to his fur, Hugo would certainly spot the tiny hitchhiker sooner or later.

Sure enough, the Pulis caught on to the baby possum’s presence, though their reaction took Watkinson completely by surprise. Instead of working themselves into a frenzy, Hugo and Kato simply ignored her.

“Hugo and Kato seemed to barely notice it was there,” Watkinson later wrote in a Facebook post. “It’s most surprising that Hugo was not barking frantically at it. Apparently, Kato was seemingly oblivious also.”

But as adorable as the scene was, Watkinson knew that the baby possum couldn’t hang around forever. Kato wasn’t equipped to look after the newborn, and without proper care the tiny creature likely wouldn’t survive the night.

Watkinson phoned a local animal rescue, who was more than happy to nurse the baby back to health. But how would they get her there? The possum refused to let go of Kato’s fur, and if given the chance to sit down in the car, the large dog would likely squish her.

And so, Watkinson did the very thing she and her pups had set out to do that morning: walk. With the possum hanging on with all its might, Kato and Hugo bounded down the road for the rescue center.

Once there, the rescue workers carefully removed the newborn from Kato’s fur and took her into their care. The tiny possum was exhausted, though Watkinson was confident she’d make a full recovery.

“I think [she] will be OK,” Watkinson wrote. “[She’s] probably not quite weaned yet but seemed well enough and was clinging on for dear life. I think [she] found the right dog for that. [Her] eyes were pretty bright still.”

But the story of Kato and his possum-loving ways didn’t end there. The very next day, Watkinson arrived to pick her pup up at a friend’s house only to find yet another baby possum clinging to his fur!

“This one was annoying him a bit more as it seemed to be digging in a bit, Hugo was still ignoring it,” Watkinson shared in disbelief. “This time the vet nurse nearly fell off her chair when we turned up.”

Believing the two newborns to be siblings, Watkinson requested that the animal rescue center keep an eye out for any adult possums missing young. It’s her hope that the baby possums can one day be reunited with their mother.

If Watkinson was stateside, however, she likely would’ve sought the help of rescue organization Dallas DogRRR. The rescuers here made it their mission to find a home for every unwanted or abandoned animal in the Dallas, Texas area, and over the years they’d seen plenty of needy animals — but never anything quite like Pittie.

When Dallas DogRRR rescuers first found the pit bull, she was wandering along a dangerous road in southeast Dallas. Avoiding the cars barreling down the pavement was actually the least of her problems…

Half-starved, Pittie just looked weak. When rescuers placed some food in a bowl for her, she wasted no time digging in. How long had she been on her own? How long had it been since she’d eaten? Apparently, she’d suffered more than starvation…

Across her nose, Pittie bore a nasty scrape. This, like her feverish appetite, only presented more questions about this dog’s background. Clearly, she’d been missing the love and care that any pet needed. Then, rescuers noticed something else about her…

“It looks like she just had puppies,” one of the rescuers commented. “So they were probably taken away from her.” Had this poor mother pit bull lost her chance at rearing her kids? The realization had barely sunk in when rescuers received even more shocking news…

Having found Pittie near a junkyard, rescuers learned that one of the men working there had seen the pit bull hanging around a certain spot in the back. Was this where she’d left her puppies? Well, not quite…

The junkyard worker led the rescuers to the back of the lot, where they found a little bundle of fur resting in a patch of dirt in the shade. But it wasn’t a pit bull puppy at all…

It was a kitten! Rescuers learned that, at just two days old, this little kitty’s mother had abandoned her, possibly because of health defects. Well, guess who’d found her then?

A new mother herself, Pittie had apparently found the perfect outlet for her untapped maternal instincts! The minute she spotted her adoptive baby, the abandoned pit bull instinctively sniffed and licked the newborn. She’d been doing a lot for the tiny kitten…

Pittie had been nursing the kitten, providing her the milk she needed to survive in a junkyard. Pittie and Kitty had found each other in their dark times, and rescuers were understandably amazed.

The rescuers who found Pittie and Kitty brought the pair back to the Dallas Mercy Animal Clinic for inspection, and even veterinarian Dr. Rick Hamlin couldn’t believe the pairing. “Over my 28-year career, I’ve never seen anything like this,” he said.

Dr. Hamlin theorized how the two came together: “My best guess is that the mother pit bull had a litter of pups and they died or weaned and she still had milk,” he said. “The pit bull probably found [the abandoned kitten] and took it as her own.”

Lucky as this chance pairing was, the rescuers’ timing proved even luckier: Pittie’s milk had run out. She wouldn’t have been able to care for Kitty any longer, meaning the feline wouldn’t have survived had the pair not been found when they were!

Not surprisingly, Pittie and Kitty stole the hearts of everyone at the clinic. Unfortunately, Kitty needed a lot of attention. Pressed for time, the clinic found a home that could give the kitten the extra care she needed—though it meant separating her from her adoptive mama.

Right away, Pittie hated being without her baby. “When I took Kitty out of the cage, Pittie started howling,” Dr. Hamlin said. “It was the first vocalization she made since she arrived.” Luckily, they weren’t separated for too long…

When caretakers returned Kitty to the clinic the next morning, Pittie, bursting with happiness, “cleaned and cleaned and cleaned her.” At that point, rescuers devised a plan to have Pittie and Kitty adopted as a unit. But then, out of nowhere, tragedy struck.

Dr. Hamlin hadn’t noticed it at first, but Kitty suffered from a malformation in her kidneys and bladder—likely the reason her mother abandoned her in the first place. Despite Dr. Hamlin’s efforts, Kitty couldn’t be saved…

Kitty passed away before the clinic could find a home for her and Pittie. How Pittie took this development was unknown, but needless to say, the mama pit bull probably noticed her adopted kitten’s absence. Could she ever have a happy life after that?

Though it was without Kitty at her side, Pittie eventually found a forever home where she received all the food and love she could ever want. Her new family already owned a few dogs, too, so Pittie fit right in!

Though the duo of Pittie and Kitty was short lived, it no doubt touched the hearts of everyone who saw them together! Just watch Pittie’s excitement once she’s reunited with her baby kitten…
