Shopping Fails That Prove The Customer Isn't Always Right

Business owners used to love the old adage "the customer is always right," but today, they're eating their own words — and the meal is downright nasty. Because of customer misunderstandings and downright stupidity, the service industry is probably the closest you can get to the gateways of Hell. These shopping fails and retail horror stories shared by anonymous Twitter users working in the industry show why the customer can be very wrong.

40. Shopping Blind

A retail cashier shared the story of a customer who was unhappy with the store's strict return policy. When informed that she couldn't return the pants she bought, she threw a fit, complaining about the lack of policy signs around the store. So the employee pointed out the return policy sign behind her. Embarrassed, the customer said, "Well, who told you to put that there?"

39. Hangry Complaints

It's no fun at Pizza Hut's complaints department, especially when you're dealing with one customer screaming at you over the phone. Calling to complain, the customer said she ordered hours before, but the restaurant either ignored or didn't process her order. The service rep had to explain she actually ordered through Dominos.

38. Hungry Karen

One woman was really hungry for a refund, trying to return her disposable instant grill to the store for... not having any food already in it. The employee had to explain that the meat is sold separately, which wasn't a usual part of his sales pitch.

37. A Confused Request

Some people don't know what they want. One barista reported dealing with a conflicting request that went something like this:

Customer: "Could I get a cappuccino — no chocolate, no foam, and no milk."

Barista: "So you'd like a black coffee?"

Customer: "I WANT A CAPPUCCINO."

Barista: *makes black coffee*

Customer: "Perfect! I don't know why you had to be so difficult about it."
